During his reign, Léopold II contributed much to Brussels' urbanization. He was the one who wanted to construct wide central avenues in his plan of Brussels, as of course the boulevard Leopold II. Various emblems of the buildings in Brussels, as the Courthouse and the basilica in Koekelberg were raised during his reign, which coincided with the start of the Art Nouveau period.
